THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR
WARGAME RULES
Air Attacks
Aircraft make one pass over the table, angled from their armies table edge. They will conduct either a bombing or straffing attack.Targets
are designated by a brigade HQ which must be able to veiw the target.
Only geographical targets maybe chosen:- villages, hilltops, roads,
junctions, bridges, woods, etc. However aircraft frequently attacked the wrong target.Roll 1 x D6,a score of 6 the aircraft attacks nearest similar target past the intended target.Score 1 the aircraft attacks the nearest similar target short of the intended target. If no such target is available the aircraft is assumed to have got completely lost and its attack is cancelled.
For bombing use the bombing template and artillery charts.Place the centre of the template over the centre of the target.Place the bomber at the beginning of the template,anti\aircraft fire is carried out at this
position.Bombers nominally carry ten medium bombs of 100kg each. This can be varied to reflect the aircraft model being used.Roll 1 x D20 per bomb carried.Match up the scores with the impact points on the bomb template.Any element under a impact point is pinned(except tanks which have a special rule). All hit elements test for being knocked out on the indirect artillery and bomb chart. However heavy bombs of 250kg or more are different in that any element they hit is destroyed and all adjacent impact points are pinned.
For straffing attacks conduct as for machineguns with a 500m(20")range
from the point of aim.Targets must all be in line and within the 500m(20") zone.Straffing attacks nominally have four shots. This can be varied to reflect the aircraft model used with one shot per forward firing machinegun or cannon.Anti-aircraft fire is carried out at the first point of aim.
Dive bombers use the artillery template and artillery chart but with
a +4 modifyer to the hit die. They nominally carry four 50kg medium bombs,
this can be varied to reflect the aircraft model in use.The dive-bomber is positioned at the bottom of the template,anti-aircraft fire is carried out here.
All aircraft attacks had a strong pyschological effect in that unprotected troops felt very exposed and would go to ground. To reflect this all unarmoured units which have elements attacked that turn by aircraft may not move elements that do not have overhead cover from view,ie woods and buildings.
