Artillery

Anti-Aircraft Fire

Carried out before the aircraft conducts its attack, but after the aircraft has been placed at its attack point.Any anti-aircraft gun in range may fire, however any guns that fire in the AA role may not fire later in direct fire at ground targets. It is optional to place destroyed aircraft 1000m(40") from their attack point.Obviously an aircraft placed in this way may not be subsequently used, inducing caution in their owners.Aircraft that are driven off abort their attacks, and have no effect on ground troops.

2 x D6 Range To Destroy To Drive off
AA Machineguns 500m(20") 12 11
20-40mm Cannon 1000m(40") 12,11 10
75-94mm Guns 1500m(60") 12 11,10

Visibility and Artillery Target Acquisition

Artillery fire may only be directed by battalion or brigade HQs.They must be able to see in a clear line of sight the target.A target is seen if it is in the open or has fired within 1000m(40").If the observer is higher the range extends to 2000m(80").Visibility in woodland is 100m(4") and in urban areas building to building, except along roads which is normal. If a target is stationery behind linear cover(including wood edges) he will be seen at 100m(4"),if moving behind linear cover the range is 200m(8").Tanks must always test to fire because of their limited visibility, unless firing at the same target.

1 x D6 Tanks spot on score 3,4,5,6

Indirect Artillery Fire

Indirect artillery fire will normally be carried out by off table batteries. If the artillery is on table the target must be within the guns arc of fire(see direct fire table). On table batteries may only fire in support of the brigade or occasionally battalion they are attached to. Artilery support is always in range. Please check ranges for mortars.

For indirect fire there are the following minimum ranges:- medium mortars 250m(10"),howizters 500m(20"),fieldguns 1000m(40").Targets behind linear cover do not count this cover against fire from mortars and howizters. When fieldguns(not mortars or howizters) are firing over a hill, there is an area of dead ground 150m(6") behind the crest, ignore any hits in this area.

When a target is observed, centre the artillery template on the target with the long axis of the template in line with position of the firing artillery.Roll 2 x D20 per fieldgun or medium mortar,1.5 x D20 per field howizter, and 1 x D20 per medium gun firing.Match up the scores with the numbered impact points on the template.these indicate hits.Any element under a hit point is pinned(except tanks who have a special rule). All hit elements test once for being knocked out on the indirect artillery chart.

Smoke

The number of rounds of smoke should be limited.Dice as for impact points, but place cotton wool as a smoke marker. The smoke stays for that turn and the next.

Medium Mortars

Mortars may also be used for direct fire, the troops using them observing for themselves.A mortar using direct fire may have two shots, they can be at the same element or two adjacent elements in depth.
