THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR

WARGAME RULES

Morale

Tanks cannot be pinned , but they can be frightened. At the end of all combat.including artillery, aircraft, direct fire and close combats(count the number of attacks) count up all the hits per armoured vehicle.Roll 1 x D6, if the score is equal or less than the number of hits the armoured vehicle has received it must in its next move retreat away from the enemy until it is out of sight of all enemy. It will then be pinned, not moving or firing until it passes an unpinning test.

50% and 20% Rout Tests

If an infantry battalion or tank company suffers 20% losses in one turn, or any company or larger unit falls below 50% strength or suffers further losses while below 50% strength, all its unpinned elements will take a rout test.

Elements that fail are removed from play and placed in the nearest urban area or road exit from the table to the rear.Once there they may attempt rally once as per the unpinning test.If they rally they come under the command of the nearest HQ(they do not count towards the strength of a unit they become attached to)

Elements lost due to routs do not constitue a cause for a further rout tests.A unit reduced to below 50% strength will not voluntarilly enter close combat.

The 50% and 20% Rout Test

Roll 1 x D6 per unpinned element in the command.

  Pass score
Elites 4,5,6
Regulars 5,6
Militia 6
Crewed weapon +1
Headquarters +1
Defending fortifications +1

(If militia score 4,5 on the die roll, they can roll again once!)

Unpinning

Pinned troops may not move or fire or test morale. They may attempt to recover in the unpinning phase at the end of the turn. Each element rols against its quality using 1 x D6.

  Pass score
Elites 4,5,6
Regulars 5,6
Militia 6
Crewed weapon +1
Headquarters +1
Defending fortifications +1

(If militia score 4,5 on the die roll, they can roll again once!)

Note. The rout tests and unpinning tests are identical.

Brigade Commander Political Affiliation

In the Republican army during the war communist officers came to the for, partly because of their ability to produce organised, trained and disciplined units, but more because Soviet aid was channeled through units commanded by communists. To reflect this all communist commanded brigades may not have less equipment than the next best equiped non communist brigade. This applies from 1937 onwards.

Animosity

Even though various political factions within the civil war would be fighting on the same side, this did not prevent them hating their friends as much as their enemies! Troops that are subject to animosity will not fight together. They will not fire on the same target,or close combat it, provide artillery support, or attack the same geographical feature. If it is indeterminant who is the attacking unit, the unit with more elements in rifle range is dominant.

Animosities

Carlist(Navarese) Falange(Blue shirts)
Anachist Communist
Marxist(POUM) Communist
Anachist Assault Guards
Italians Everyone

Another problem for the republic before the Popular Army was formed, was the reliability of the officer corp of the old Penninsular army. Some were disaffected and would desert when they could, but a large part were old, unfit or just the poor quality officers that garrison armies collect. To reflect this roll 1 x D6 when a penninsular unit is first fire on.If score 1,2, the command element is pinned and the unit reverts to militia quality.

Brigade Morale

If a brigade is reduced to only one battalion above 50% strength,it is exhausted and will advance no further. If all battalions are reduced to below 50% strength, the brigade is defeated and all battalion action points must be used to retire troop elements full moves.
